Wall-Mounted Hair Hygrometer – Reliable analog instrument for measuring relative humidity in incubators. Ideal for incubators without a wet bulb hygrometer or as a complementary monitor. Works without batteries or power supply.

A pheasant farmer from Vicenza wrote to me: "I have an old MG70 without integrated humidity control. With the hair hygrometer installed, I can finally monitor humidity throughout the cycle. Hatching has improved significantly since I started monitoring this parameter."

When is it needed? For incubators without a built-in hygrometer , as a visual check in addition to the control unit sensor, for continuous monitoring without replacing batteries. The dimensions are designed for the MG and Astrale series holes.

How it works: The hair hygrometer exploits the property of hair (natural or synthetic) to stretch as humidity increases. A system of levers transmits this variation to a hand with a graduated scale in %RH. It requires no electrical power.

Comparison with a wet bulb hygrometer: A hair hygrometer is easier to install (just insert it into the hole) and requires no water or sock maintenance. However, it has a slower response (5-25 minutes vs. a few minutes) and lower accuracy (±5% vs. ±3%). The wet bulb is specifically calibrated for 37.8°C, while the hair hygrometer is generic. For precise professional monitoring, we recommend the wet bulb; for practical, maintenance-free monitoring, the hair hygrometer is excellent.

📦 Product information

Item code: WALL HYGIENE 70

Italian name: Wall mounted hair hygrometer

English name: Hair Hygrometer / Wall Hygrometer

Type: Analog humidity control instrument

Compatibility: FIEM MG and Astrale series (pre-drilled holes)

💡 PRACTICAL ACCESSORY: The hair hygrometer is particularly suitable for incubators without a wet bulb hygrometer. It is inserted directly inside the incubator, visible from the outside.

🔍 What is a hair hygrometer?

The hair hygrometer is an analog instrument that measures relative humidity using the hygroscopic property of hair (natural or synthetic). Human hair, exposed to relative humidity between 2.5% and 100%, stretches proportionally to the increase in humidity.

Operating principle:

  1. A bundle of hair (natural or synthetic) is secured at one end
  2. The other end is connected to a mechanical lever system
  3. As humidity increases, hair grows longer.
  4. Levers transmit movement to a hand
  5. The hand indicates the %RH value on the graduated scale

This principle was perfected in 1783 by the Swiss scientist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure and remains one of the simplest and most economical methods for measuring humidity today.

✅ Advantages of a hair hygrometer

  • It works without electronics: No power or batteries required
  • Instant installation: It fits into the MG/Astrale pre-drilled holes
  • No water maintenance: No need to fill tanks or change socks
  • Robust: Also suitable for less than perfect conditions
  • Continue reading: Always visible without having to open the incubator
  • Quality models: Accuracy ±3% RH in the 20-85% range

❌ Disadvantages of professional incubation

  • Slower reaction speed: A 15% change takes 5-25 minutes to register
  • Calibration sensitivity: If the hair is worn, dirty or not regenerated, the readings become inaccurate.
  • Variable accuracy: Errors of 5-10% in basic models, especially below 20% and above 85% RH
  • Non-specific for incubation: Designed for general environments, not calibrated to 37.8°C
  • Nonlinearity: Hair length variation is not proportional to humidity
  • Degradation over time: The hair loses elasticity and precision
  • Extreme temperatures: Does not work below -30°C (fiber freezing)

🏆 Which one to choose?

Choose the HAIR hygrometer if:

  • Do you want a simple and immediate visual check?
  • Your incubator has pre-drilled holes (MG/Astrale series)
  • You don't want to deal with maintenance (water, socks)
  • You need it as a complementary indicator, not as the main reference

Choose the WET BULB hygrometer if:

  • You want the highest possible accuracy (±3% RH)
  • You need an instrument calibrated for 37.8°C (incubation temperature)
  • You need to check the accuracy of the digital sensors
  • Manage professional incubations where humidity is critical

🔧 Installation

Simple procedure

  1. Place the hygrometer in the incubator in a place visible from the outside.
  2. Wait 30-60 minutes for the reading to stabilize

💡 Tip: To check the calibration, you can use the saturated salt method. Place the hygrometer in a closed container with moist table salt: after 24 hours, it should indicate about 75% RH.

🔧 Maintenance

🔧 Calibration procedure (saturated salt method)

To check the accuracy of your hair hygrometer, follow this recommended procedure:

Necessary material

      • Airtight container (glass jar with lid or food storage container)
      • Regular table salt
      • A few drops of water
      • Stand or grid to lift the hygrometer

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Prepare the airtight container: Glass jar with lid or tightly sealed food container
  2. Prepare the wet salt: Put table salt in a small cup and add a few drops of water until you get a "mush" (do not add excess water)
  3. Place the hygrometer: Lift it off the salt using a rack or stand - it should NOT touch the salt or water.
  4. Seal tightly the container
  5. Please wait as long as necessary: For hair hygrometers you need 18-24 hours
  6. Read the value: The humidity inside the jar must be 75% RH ± 2%

📌 How to interpret the reading

      • 73-77% RH: Perfect, hygrometer calibrated correctly
      • 70-80% RH: Acceptable for hair hygrometers (they are not ultra accurate)
      • Error ±10%: It needs to be adjusted if it has a calibration screw
      • Top error: Old/dirty/dry hair → regenerate it or replace the hygrometer

🆘 Common errors that distort calibration

  1. Salt too wet: Creates 100% RH instead of 75%
  2. Non-airtight container: External humidity affects the reading
  3. Changing temperature: Maintain stable temperature during the test
  4. Hygrometer touching salt: He must remain relieved
  5. Hair that has not been regenerated for years: It loses elasticity and precision

✔ Advice from 45 years of experience

Hair hygrometers are reliable, but:

      • They react slowly to changes
      • After years they become "lazy" with major mistakes
      • The high temperatures of the incubator stress them

Use them as a complementary periodic check, not as the primary tool. For accurate reference measurements, we recommend the wet bulb hygrometer calibrated to 37.8°C.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the dial with a soft, dry cloth
  • Calibration: Check with salt method every 6-12 months
  • Hair regeneration: If readings are inaccurate, expose to steam for a few minutes
  • Avoid: Direct water splashes, excessive dust, impacts

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Will this fit my MG70 incubator?
A: Yes, it is designed to fit the MG (50/70/100/140/200/244/316) and Astrale series bores.

Q: Is it more accurate than the wet bulb hygrometer?
A: No, the hair hygrometer is accurate to ±5% typical (±3% in better models), while the wet bulb is accurate to ±3% and is specifically calibrated to 37.8°C.

Q: Do I need to calibrate it before use?
A: It is advisable to check the calibration using the saturated salt method (it should indicate ~75% RH).

Q: How long does a hair hygrometer last?
A: With correct use, several years, but the hair loses elasticity over time and precision decreases.

Q: Can I use this as my only humidity monitoring tool?
A: Yes, it's a practical solution for incubators without a built-in hygrometer. For professional monitoring, we also recommend a wet-bulb hygrometer as a reference.

Fiem Smart Automatic Egg Turning Grid (Exploded...

€12.10
Availability: 1000 In Stock

🥚 The 32/A egg turning grid is not a simple divider: it is the system that gently rolls the eggs, replicating the natural movement of the hen!

At €9.98 (excluding VAT) , this grid (part no. 8 in the exploded view) neatly divides the rows of eggs and, connected to the tensioning system, rolls them with precision. Just like a mother hen turns each egg with her beak several times a day, this grid, moving back and forth for 30 minutes, gently rolls each egg, preventing the embryo from sticking to the shell.

🔄 Movement is vital: without regular rotation, the embryo adheres to the internal membrane and dies. As specified in the FIEM manual, the gearmotor moves the grid in hourly cycles (30 minutes forward, 30 minutes backward), causing the eggs to roll on their axis. It's this constant action that increases hatching rates from 20% without voltage to 80-90% with the correct voltage!

⚠️ When should you replace it? If the dividers are bent and the eggs don't roll evenly, if it no longer engages the gearmotor pin, if it has breaks that block some eggs, or if wear and tear after many cycles compromises the smooth movement.

💡 The dividers are not random: they keep the eggs at the right distance to roll without bumping into each other, organize the space for maximum capacity, and ensure that each egg receives the necessary movement.

Compatible with Smart only , designed for Smart automatic or manual voltage system.

📱 Eggs not rolling properly? Send a WhatsApp video of the movement for immediate diagnosis.

🚚 Shipping from Como in 1 day. Minimum order €20. FIEM since 1975 , natural movement for excellent results. 24-month warranty for private individuals, 12 VAT numbers.
